Meaning & history

Sapphire has long been associated with royalty and wisdom, and blue sapphires have been a traditional choice for royal engagement rings. Its name is thought to come from the Greek sappheiros.

Folklore and symbolism are shared here as tradition, not as fact or as health claims.

Care tips

Clean with warm, soapy water and a soft brush. Untreated and heat-treated sapphires are usually safe in ultrasonic cleaners; stones with fillers should be cleaned with soapy water only.
